Hello, welcome to the GRiPring’s home page. My intention with this site is to show newcomers how to use QuikLink Interactive Inc.'s GRiP (Generic Role-playing for Internet Players) to play RPGs online, and to expand on the sometimes terse how-tos in each module’s help menus.
To my mind GRiP‘s interface is still the best simulation of tabletop gaming I have found to date, despite steady competition. Even though the program is showing its age, I have yet to see anything that matches my gaming and GMing style better, and very few which come close to its functionality even if we restrict our focus to D20 RPG interfaces. My hat’s off to QLI/RPGRealms Publishing for an excellent product!
iGM is the shareware ($35 US) gamemaster’s game server which makes the whole system work. With it GMs can create adventures, maps, and non-player characters, view Player’s character sheets, chat with players, and generally manage a game in progress. This is the only part of the gaming suite which must be purchased, the other modules are freeware.
iPC is the freeware client interface and instant messenger which allows players to enter information into their character sheets, connect with other players and iGM for a gaming session, view maps, and record their chat sessions & adventures.
The final piece of the suite is iCS, the character sheet designer. Just as no two GMs run their games the same way, no two RPGs use the same character sheet, so this is where GMs to create their own sheets or modify the layout of others’ sheets. One of the addictive extras that comes with GRiP is the CSML macro language with which a savvy GM or Players can automate his character sheets to reduce the tedium of rules lookups and increase the feel of the game.
This site was inspired by an unfortunately anonymous gamemaster’s partial tutorial, long since abandoned. The following link will take you there, partly as an alternate POV and partly to keep me honest. While imitation is said to be the sincerest form of flattery, plagiarism doesn’t flatter either party.
